German Youth
(School project) Why did Nazism appealed to the german youth?

My school is making me do a research project and I have been assigned to talk about why Nazism appealed to the German youth. The problem is that it needs to be from a primary source meaning it should be from an eye witness of this particular event.

If anyone would like to contribute to answering this or have links to any primary sources on the net, please help.

i lived in Germany for 6 years and was associated with a lot of individuals that went through that difficult time. it seems during that time and place that there was a lot of nationalism going on, just as was going on in the U.S. (sort of like what was going on when 9/11 happened). at the time they were caught up in the “cause” and the “purpose” of their race and it’s survival.
with all that was going on at the time the only one that they could believe was their leader who said basically that the whole world was out to get them and that they were the perfect race.
and youth, such as it is, fell into that belief. please note that most were forced into service for the fatherland. i know that i did not meet your criteria for this report but as i said i knew people who were there and the nightmare that they endured just to survive to tell their story. good luck with your report, i hope you get a “A”.

Cheated out of playing nightclub canary Sally Bowles on Broadway in director Hal Price’s Cabaret, Liza Minnelli nevertheless delivered an Oscar-winning star turn in Bob Fosse’s cinematic reinvention of the show (which had the good sense to retain perverse imp Joel Grey from the stage production). Although the 1972 film discarded several songs from the original score, the new ones sound even better…

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Jugendweihe (youth consecration) is a secular coming of age ceremony practiced by German 14 year olds. It originated among the secular societies in the 19th century as an alternative to Confirmation by the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. It was especially widespread in East Germany, where atheism was encouraged under the GDR, but has become less popular since German reunification. Today it is occasionally known as Jugendfeier (youth ceremony). The term Jugendweihe first appeared in 1852, to mark a new form of initiation developed by the secular movements, who developed a course of moral instruction for their children, founded on cultural history, as an alternative to Christian teachings. The concluding Jugendweihe was above all a ceremony to mark the child’s leaving school, and so was held at the age of 14. Since the 1890s the form of the ceremony has remained largely unchanged. The teacher makes a speech about the humanist worldview, the young person makes a pledge, and is given ‘pages of remembrance’ (Erinnerungsblätter) and a commemorative book. The ceremony is broken up

New – Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, German society experienced the end of a political and cultural antagonism, which had defined East and West since WWII. Reunification was marked by post-modern feelings of fragmentation, uncertainty and loss of authenticity. This led to glorifications of past cultures, evident in the phenomenon of Ostalgie, the recurrence of the Heimat tradition and the revival of Counter-cultural styles amongst contemporary youth. With Hans Weingartner’s film ‘The Edu

112 Mercer Street: Einstein, Russell, Godel, Pauli, and the End of Innocence in Science

$0.99

As World War II wound down and it became increasingly clear that the Allies would emerge victorious, Albert Einstein invited three close friends-all titans of contemporary science and philosophy-to his home at 112 Mercer Street in Princeton, New Jersey, to discuss what they loved best, science and philosophy, and perhaps to ponder their vision of the postwar world. His guests were the legendary philosopher and pacifist Bertrand Russell; the boy wonder of quantum physics Wolfgang Pauli; and the brilliant logician Kurt Gödel, whose “incompleteness” theorems a decade before had shattered the link between logic and mathematics. Their casual meetings took place far from the horrific battlefields of the war and the (then) secret lair of experimental atomic physicists, Los Alamos, New Mexico. Just how many times they met and precisely what they discussed remains a matter of conjecture. All four men were well along in years by scientific standards-where youth tends to dominate with major breakthroughs-and they had to be aware of what Feldman terms “the pathos of science,” that their own work would one day be superseded. As they met, they and their scientific brethren were awakening to the dire consequences of atomic power-as well as the fact that henceforth science and politics were inextricably intertwined. It was, as Feldman notes, the end of innocence in science.Taking these historic meetings as his starting point, Feldman sketches the lives and contributions of the four friends, colleagues, and rivals-especially Einstein, innately self-confident but frustrated in his attempt to come up with a unified theory, and the aristocratic but self-doubting Lord Russell. In a final section, Feldman also discusses the roles of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his German counterpart, Werner Heisenberg. Though neither was present at any of these meetings, they both cast long shadows over 112 Mercer Street during that cold winter of 1943-44.
