Photography Blogs

I am interested in Photography but have no knowledge about it. Any pointers for beginners?
I want to learn photography but have no prior experience in it. Kindly suggest magazines, websites, blogs and/or articles that are suitable for beginners. Thanks in advance.
Hi Little,
Photography can be an addictive hobby. Now that you’re warned, here are a few tips – and some websites to check out below.
1) Get a digital camera. Any digital camera is fine to start with. If you can afford an SLR (as opposed to a compact or “point-and-shoot” camera), you’ll be better off in the long run. Whichever camera you get, don’t be overwhelmed by all the menus and settings. You’ll learn those in time. To start with, just leave it in automatic or program mode. Beware of all the blogs where the participants discuss technical details of their cameras as if that was the most important thing. It’s not.
2) Educate yourself. What you want to learn at this stage is not so much how to work a camera, but how to create a photo. Things like composition, quality of light, and how to tell a story with your photo can be learned with any camera. Of course, there are some technical issues to deal with such as getting the correct exposure and focusing. Take a lot of photos and be prepared to delete a lot of them. Even pros do that. At first you won’t be a very good judge of your own work, but with time you’ll get better at that.
3) Education (part 2). Enroll in a photo class at a local community college or something similar. If you can afford it, the New York Institute of Photography (NYIP.com) has an excellent online photo course.
4) Join a photo club. Most are on the web these days, so a google search ought to find one in your area. Although some of the listings are old, a good place to start is the Big List of Photo Clubs (link below). You can check out my club in San Diego: PolyPhotoClub.com too.
5) A few good sources of information. Outdoor Photographer Magazine is good for beginners. The blogs and photography forums online are probably not a good place to start. Many of them are so fragmented that you’ll have a hard time learning anything. You’d be better off with in-person classes or books You can find good books for free at your local library. The technical details discussed in older books don’t necessarily apply anymore (such as how to develop film and that sort of thing), but any discussion of the artistic side of photography would still be valid.
Thanks for the excellent question and have fun!
Alan

Alvarado’s Classic Modern Pin-ups $34.99 The essential collection of pin-ups from photographer Robert Alvarado. He subtly combines color, form, and style to create an allure that captivates onlookers and confounds fellow photographers. The influence of pin-up photography pioneers like Alberto Vargas and Gil Elvgren is clear, but throughout the 145 alluring examples of Alvarados work, his signature approach to this classic form will impress you in a way that only modern photography can. A year of trial and error went into achieving the look presented here: luscious images with flat color and a shine that accentuates the models key features. Through Alvarados modern innovations, which are debated on photography blogs, he composes pin-ups with models in traditional poses, in clothes, lingerie, or tastefully nude, looking directly at the camera. |
