Negative Photo

To Scan a printed photograph for which i have a photo negative,should scan positive or negative.?

What software to use with Scanner ? I need to scan both Black/White and Colour photos.My Negatives are in strips of 6 frames per strip.

I just use MS paint. or if you are looking for somthing more advance use the GIMP(its just like photoshop But FREE)
